Donald W. Parkyn

Consulting Forensic Actuary
Mr. Parkyn is a consulting actuary specializing in forensic actuarial work. As an actuary, he applies the science of mathematical probabilities to assist the court in the disposition of contingent financial problems.
Education and Qualifications
Mr. Parkyn has an undergraduate degree in economics and statistics [1955] and a graduate degree in mathematics [1959], both from the University of Denver. He has two years of subsequent graduate work in actuarial science from the University of Texas.
During his career, Mr. Parkyn has been as Associate of the Society of Actuaries, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, the Conference of Actuaries and has qualified for the status of Enrolled Actuary.
Experience
Mr. Parkyn has been providing forensic actuarial services since 1977. The majority of his services involve the determination of a fair value for the community interest in retirement benefits upon the dissolution of marriage and the development of division orders. Additional actuarial services involve the determination of future earning and benefit potential lost due to death, disability or employment termination, and other calculations involving interest and life contingencies. He has prepared over 12,000 reports, provided court testimony as an expert witness in over 200 cases and has testified in twenty-six counties in California and three counties in Nevada. His prior work experience includes fifteen years as an actuary for the California Public Employees Retirement System, five and one-half years with various consulting actuarial firms and insurance companies, two years in the field of mathematical statistics, and two years as a mathematics instructor.
Lecturing
Mr. Parkyn has conducted his own seminars on the determination of the community interest in retirement benefits upon the dissolution of marriage and, for the Association of Certified Family Law Specialists, seminars on Qualified Domestic Relations Orders. He has been a featured speaker at the State Bar convention in Monterey, the Norton Family Law Seminar in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the Trial Institute of the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists, the Annual Nevada Family Law Seminar, the Association of Certified Family Law Specialists, and the Enrolled Actuaries meeting in Washington, D.C. He has conducted classes for persons studying for the examinations of the Society of Actuaries.
